Using Reference Images for Better Character and Style Consistency

How to use reference images in both image and video generation to maintain consistent characters, styles, and visual identity across multiple generations.

Why Reference Images Matter

Without a reference, AI models generate a different-looking character or setting every time. Reference images anchor the generation to specific visual attributes โ€” face structure, clothing style, lighting environment โ€” enabling consistent output across a series.

Character Consistency Strategy

  1. Generate a strong character image with Flux Dev or Recraft V4 Pro using a detailed prompt
  2. Save this as your character reference
  3. For subsequent generations, upload this image as the reference and describe the new scene
  4. Use models like Flux Kontext Pro or Kling 3.0 Pro I2V which are optimized for reference consistency

Style Consistency

Use a generated image you are happy with as a style reference. Upload it with the prompt: "Apply the color palette and visual style of the reference image to: [new scene description]"
